The North News
Chandigarh, June 12
In a bizarre yet real-life episode that’s sparked conversations across Uttar Pradesh, a young woman reportedly left her husband after losing two followers on Instagram. The unusual dispute unfolded in Hapur district, where a couple’s marital discord reached the local women’s police station — all because of a drop in the wife’s social media following.
Nisha, who is married to Vijender from Noida, is an avid Instagram user and regularly shares reels online. Initially uninterested in household chores, she reportedly shifted focus to domestic responsibilities after her husband advised her to reduce time spent on social media. But things took a dramatic turn when Nisha noticed that her Instagram follower count had dropped by two. She confronted Vijender, accusing him of sabotaging her social media presence. An argument ensued, escalating to the point where Nisha packed her bags and left for her parental home in Pilkhuwa, according to media reports.
The matter soon landed at the Hapur women’s police station, where officers conducted multiple counselling sessions with the couple. Police officials claim the immediate conflict has been resolved, though the couple continues to live separately.
Officers familiar with the case described it as a “first of its kind” incident, highlighting how digital lives and social media validation are increasingly influencing real-world relationships.
