Chandigarh, August 6

The Centre has revealed that Punjab generates around 4,376.6 tonnes of solid waste daily, yet less than half of this amount undergoes processing or treatment. Ludhiana, identified as the most polluted city in the state, produces the highest volume at 1,100 tonnes per day (TPD), but only 15% of it is processed. This critical information was disclosed during a Lok Sabha session on Monday, the news outlet The Indian Express reported.

According to the news outlet, responding to a query from Congress’s Patiala MP, Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change provided detailed insights from the 2022-23 Punjab State Pollution Control Board (PPCB) report. The Indian Express reported that the data highlights that out of the total waste generated in the state, 4,367.2 TPD is collected, 1,795.8 TPD is treated, and 2,571.4 TPD ends up in landfills. In Ludhiana, where 1,100 TPD is generated, only 165 TPD is processed and 5 TPD is disposed of in secured landfill sites.
