Chandigarh, April 9
Punjab Police have dismantled a suspected ISI-backed Babbar Khalsa International terror module with the arrest of two men from Gurdaspur. The police say the group was planning major attacks in the state and have seized grenades along with explosive materials from the suspects.
The accused, identified as Akash Masih and Jablaun, residents of Dulla Nangal in Gurdaspur district, were apprehended during a special police check in Jogowal Bedia village. According to police officials, the two men attempted to flee when signalled to stop but were intercepted before they could escape.
A search led to the recovery of five hand grenades, two special detonators, and improvised explosive device materials, including a kilogram of explosives packed with nails. Authorities also seized a push-to-talk timer, a Baofeng walkie-talkie, and a trigger mechanism.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that this operation was the result of coordinated efforts by the Amritsar Rural Police, the Gurdaspur Police, the Counter Intelligence Wing’s State Special Operation Cell, and central agencies. Deputy Inspector General of Police Sandeep Goel said that preliminary investigations indicate the terror module was being controlled by handlers based outside India with support from Pakistan’s ISI.
Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya explained that forensic and bomb disposal teams were called to the scene and that the explosives were safely defused. An FIR has been registered at Kalanaur police station under the Explosive Substances Act. Police say both suspects have a history of criminal activities and that investigations are underway to uncover further links and support networks associated with the module.
The police operation is seen as a significant step in preventing potential attacks in Punjab. Authorities are continuing to investigate the module’s broader connections and urge the public to remain vigilant.
