The Punjab government has recruited 52,606 people in three years, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Wednesday, calling it a historic milestone in government hiring. Speaking at an event to distribute appointment letters to 951 elementary teacher trainees (ETTs), Mann urged the new recruits to drive an “education revolution” in the state. He said their role was crucial in improving teaching standards and ensuring students received quality education.
Mann, whose mother was a teacher, said his government had ended the practice of assigning non-teaching duties to educators, allowing them to focus solely on classroom instruction. He contrasted his administration’s approach with previous regimes, which he accused of neglecting public education. He also reiterated his government’s commitment to merit-based hiring, claiming that not a single appointment among the 52,000 had been legally challenged.
Addressing national politics, Mann vowed to oppose the BJP’s proposed delimitation exercise, calling it an attempt to weaken political opponents. He said he would visit Chennai to rally support against the initiative. Mann also claimed his government had taken decisive action against Punjab’s drug trade, arresting major traffickers and seizing their assets.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Local Bodies Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian, and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora also attended the event.
