Kanwardeep Singh, Chairman of the Punjab State Child Rights Protection Commission, has taken suo-motu cognizance of a shocking case of public humiliation in Ludhiana, where a factory owner allegedly subjected a mother and her three daughters to Taliban-style punishment.
According to reports from electronic media, the accused paraded the victims with their faces blackened and forced them to carry a sign reading, “I am a thief.” The incident, which allegedly stemmed from accusations of theft, has sparked outrage for violating children’s rights.
In response, the Commission has directed the Ludhiana Police Commissioner to register a case under Sections 75 and 79 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, along with relevant provisions of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, and the Indian Penal Code, 2023. The Chairman has demanded immediate action against the accused and a detailed report by January 23, 2025.
The Police Commissioner has also been instructed to take strict measures against individuals circulating photographs of the children, as per Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
Furthermore, the Commission has ordered the Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner to take action under child labour laws against the factory owner and other culprits involved. The Deputy Commissioner must inform the Commission of the actions taken within seven days.
The Chairman emphasized the importance of upholding children’s rights and urged authorities to ensure justice in the case.
