Shimla, November 29
Hindu Sangharsh Samiti members in Shimla staged a mock funeral procession for the state government on Saturday as tensions escalated over an alleged illegal mosque in Sanjauli. Demonstrators also burnt an effigy and announced an end to their 12-day hunger strike. The protest, held in Sanjauli market, marked a shift in the group’s strategy as it launched a public awareness campaign and stepped up pressure on the administration.
The Samiti boycotted a scheduled meeting with local officials, accusing the district administration of attempting to “cover up” the issue and showing a “lax approach”. Leaders alleged that Friday prayers were held at the mosque despite restrictions and claimed no action had been taken to disconnect its electricity and water supply.
They said authorities had been giving verbal assurances but had failed to issue any written directives, leaving “no possibility of a meaningful outcome” from talks. Responses from the administration and police were not immediately available, the story will be updated when they reply.
