Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal highlighted the significant role of India’s footwear and leather industry in driving economic growth and showcasing skilled craftsmanship during the National Export Excellence Awards 2023-24. Addressing the gathering, Goyal applauded exporters for their dedication and urged the industry to prioritize quality and sustainability to enhance global competitiveness. He emphasized the need for eco-friendly production, including zero-pollution processes through proper treatment plants, to meet international standards. “With economies of scale, India’s competitiveness can surpass global benchmarks,” he noted.
India’s leather and footwear sector, generating annual exports of $5 billion, plays a critical role in employment generation, particularly for economically weaker sections and women. The awards ceremony recognized excellence across various product segments, underscoring inclusivity and sustainability.
The CLE has been instrumental in promoting exports, enhancing global competitiveness, and encouraging innovation in the industry. This annual event serves as a platform to celebrate the achievements of Indian exporters while charting a sustainable path forward for the sector.
