The Supreme Court on Thursday said that its directive to provide medical aid to fasting farmers’ leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal was not intended to break his fast. The Supreme Court stressed that its orders were focused solely on ensuring Dallewal’s health, dismissing suggestions that its intervention was aimed at ending his fast. “Shifting him to a hospital does not mean the fast is broken,” the Court stated, emphasizing that its primary concern was to prevent any harm to his life, which it described as invaluable to the farmers’ cause., the news outlet the Bar and Bench reported. The Supreme Court also criticized reports by the Punjab government and media that could have created the impression that the medical aid was an effort to weaken the protests.
Representing the Punjab government, Advocate General Gurminder Singh assured the Court that a committee had been formed to ensure Dallewal receives the necessary medical support. He reiterated that the state was not taking sides but had been attempting to persuade Dallewal to accept medical assistance under the condition of further talks on the farmers’ demands, the news outlet said.
