New Delhi, January 7
With the war in Gaza continuing to reshape regional politics in the Middle East, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has held talks with Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, reaffirming New Delhi’s support for efforts aimed at a lasting settlement. According to an official statement, the two leaders spoke by telephone on Wednesday, exchanging New Year greetings and reviewing the trajectory of the India–Israel strategic partnership. Both sides said the relationship was rooted in shared democratic values and mutual trust, and agreed to deepen cooperation in the year ahead.
During the call, Netanyahu briefed Modi on the implementation of the Gaza peace plan, against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities and mounting humanitarian concerns. Modi reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of a “just and durable” peace, underlining the need for dialogue and stability in the region. The conversation also touched on security, with both leaders reiterating a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism in all its forms. They agreed that countering extremism remained a shared priority.
India has sought to maintain a careful diplomatic balance, sustaining close ties with Israel while continuing to support the Palestinian cause and calling for restraint, humanitarian access and respect for international law.
The two prime ministers also exchanged views on broader regional and global developments and agreed to stay in touch as the situation in West Asia continues to evolve.
