Mohali building collapse: Death toll rises to two, probe ordered

The death toll in the Mohali building collapse has risen to two after the recovery of a 29-year-old man’s body on Sunday. Identified as Abhishek Dhanwal, a resident of Ambala and an IT professional, his body was recovered after a 23-hour rescue operation.

Earlier, on Saturday, a 20-year-old woman, Drishti Verma, was pulled from the rubble but succumbed to her injuries. Originally from Theog in Shimla district, Verma worked for a private firm in Mohali.

The large-scale rescue operation, involving 600 personnel include the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the concluded at 4:30 PM on Sunday. The incident, which occurred in Sohana village, has been attributed to excavation work carried out adjacent to the building’s basement.

Mohali Deputy Commissioner (DC) announced that the rescue operation set an example of coordinated efforts between various agencies. “The 23-hour operation by the NDRF and the Army showcased exceptional teamwork and efficiency. A time-bound magisterial probe has been ordered to investigate the cause of the collapse,” said the DC.

The probe aims to determine accountability and prevent such incidents in the future. So far, two casualties have been confirmed, but officials are ensuring no individuals remain unaccounted for.

Excavation blamed for collapse

Locals reported that gym-goers and construction workers were inside or near the building when the structure collapsed. Five people were initially feared trapped, though authorities have not confirmed if others remain missing.
