Kapil Parmar carved his name in history as he secured a bronze, India’s first-ever Paralympic medal in judo, in the Men’s 60 kg (J1) category. With his remarkable performance, he was able to defeat Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira with a decisive 10-0.

While he faced a setback by losing the semifinals to Iran’s S Banitaba Khorram Abadi, his amazing performance in the bronze medal match highlighted his exceptional skill and resilience. He won the bronze despite receiving yellow cards in two of his contests, usually given for minor violations such as passivity or risky techniques.

The J1 classification is for athletes who have no to very low visual acuity and are identified by red circles on their uniforms, indicating they may require guided support. Parmar had a passion for judo, but a severe electric shock after accidentally touching a water pump left him in a coma for six months. Despite his difficulties, he never gave up on his passion.
