India is set to launch the European Union’s Proba-3 space satellite in early December, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced at the 3rd Indian Space Conclave on Tuesday. “This marks another milestone in India’s expanding role as a global space leader and highlights its deepening partnership with the EU in space research. The Proba-3 mission, focused on solar observation, underlines the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) reputation as a reliable international partner. The satellite, which arrived at Sriharikota, represents a step forward in collaborative scientific exploration,” he said.
Givin details, he said that the Proba-3 will be the third EU satellite launched by India, following Proba-1 and Proba-2. “Unique in its solar study focus, it aims to provide crucial insights into solar corona dynamics, enhancing ISRO’s record of scientific achievements, including the recent Chandrayaan-3 mission,” he added. Dr. Singh emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2020 space policy reforms as key to the sector’s rapid growth, fostering private and international collaborations and boosting India’s space technology industry, now home to over 300 startups.
Dr. Singh noted that these reforms go beyond exploration, leveraging space technology for infrastructure, urban planning, agriculture, and water conservation under programs like “Jal Shakti.” These advancements are extending space benefits to sectors like transportation and rural development, showcasing the transformative impact of India’s space progress.
