Chandigarh, April 11
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed officials to reserve 33 percent of the 150 MBBS seats and 33 percent of the 850 beds at the upcoming Shri Sheetla Mata Devi Medical College and Hospital in Gurugram for students and residents of the state. He also directed that fees for reserved MBBS seats be kept in line with those of other government medical colleges to ensure affordable medical education for local students.
The directions were issued on Friday during a Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting on the operation and maintenance of the project, which is being developed under the Public-Private Partnership model. The meeting was attended by Industry and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh, Heritage and Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma, Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education Minister Arti Singh Rao, and senior officials.
Saini instructed that patients occupying the reserved beds must be provided benefits under the Ayushman Bharat scheme so that the economically weaker sections receive accessible, quality healthcare. He also emphasized that the institution should be developed in line with international standards to strengthen Gurugram’s healthcare ecosystem.
During the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary of the Medical Education and Research Department, Sumita Misra, informed that the institute is being developed over 30.75 acres in Sector 102A, Kherki Majra, Gurugram. Construction began on April 1, 2022, and is scheduled to be completed by August 31, 2026. Of the total project cost of Rs 679.08 crore, nearly Rs 500 crore has already been spent.
The project is being developed through contributions shared in the ratio of 50 to 45 to 5 by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, and the Shri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board, respectively. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority is the executing agency for the project. The institution is expected to be handed over to the selected bidder by October 31, 2026, after completion of all formalities.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to prepare proposals for three to four additional hospitals, with capacities ranging from 100 to 150 beds, at various locations in Gurugram to cater to the growing healthcare needs of the population. The government’s push to expand healthcare infrastructure in Gurugram through strategic investment and public-private partnerships aims to ensure better medical facilities and affordable access for local residents.
