India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has said that future wars will demand swift, joint responses across services and heavy reliance on new technologies. Delivering the keynote address at RAN SAMWAD, a first-of-its-kind tri-service seminar on warfare at the Army War College in Madhya Pradesh, Gen Chauhan called ‘jointness’ the foundation of India’s military transformation.

He argued that battlefields of tomorrow will not recognise service boundaries, and success will hinge on integrated logistics, indigenous defence capabilities and civil-military collaboration. The CDS underscored the need to absorb emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber warfare tools and quantum systems. He also highlighted India’s efforts to develop the Sudarshan Chakra defence shield, likened to an “Iron Dome,” capable of serving as both “a shield and a sword.”

Quoting Kautilya, Gen Chauhan said India has historically been a source of knowledge but lacks deep academic literature on war studies. He urged serious research into strategy, leadership, morale and technology to strengthen national preparedness. He added that RAN SAMWAD aims to give voice to young and mid-level officers familiar with new technologies, allowing their ideas to harmonise with the experience of senior personnel.

The two-day seminar features serving military professionals in strategic dialogue. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will deliver the plenary address on the closing day, when joint doctrines and a new technology roadmap are expected to be released.
