A viral video of a 19-year-old college student has brought renewed attention to allegations of abuse inside a government-run institution in Himachal Pradesh, where police have booked a professor and three students on charges of ragging and sexual harassment linked to her death.

Late on Thursday night, police confirmed that an FIR had been registered following a complaint by the student’s family, who allege that she was subjected to assault, intimidation and sexually inappropriate behaviour at Government Degree College in Dharamshala. The family says these incidents left her deeply traumatised and pushed her into depression.

According to the complaint, three female students allegedly beat and threatened the second-year student on  September 18  last year. Serious allegations have also been levelled against a college professor, accused of making obscene advances towards her. The cumulative impact, the family claims, led to a steady deterioration in her mental and physical health.

Despite treatment at several hospitals, the student died on  December 26, 2025 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana. Her father told police that the family was initially unable to approach authorities because of her critical condition and the shock they were dealing with at the time.

The FIR has been registered under Sections 75, 115(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009.

A complaint was later submitted through the chief minister’s helpline on December 20, after which the matter was forwarded to Dharamshala police. the officers have visited the college, questioned the accused students and sought details from the college administration as part of the ongoing investigation.

The professor’s statement was not available at this stage and that the story would be updated as and when it is received.
