The Finance Ministry has directed its employees to avoid using AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek for official work, citing concerns over data confidentiality. “It has been determined that AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, etc.) in office computers and devices pose risks for the confidentiality of government data and documents,” the ministry stated in a notification.
The information surfaced on the same day that Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held discussions with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on India’s AI strategy. The talks focused on developing a complete AI stack, including GPUs, models, and applications.
Vaishnaw later shared details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), noting that Altman expressed readiness to collaborate with India on all three components of the AI stack. “Had a super cool discussion with @sama on our strategy of creating the entire AI stack – GPUs, model, and apps. Willing to collaborate with India on all three. PM @narendramodi Ji guides us to democratize technology. Sam appreciated PM’s vision,” he wrote.
