Congress legislators staged a protest outside the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on the opening day of the winter session, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of double standards on law and order and of shielding a party MLA facing rape allegations in Dharamshala on Wednesday.
Carrying placards and raising slogans, members of the Congress Legislature Party criticised the BJP leadership over what they described as its selective approach to policing and its attempts to “spread misinformation” nationwide about the state of law and order.
Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi told reporters that the BJP had been trying to portray law-and-order issues as failures of the government, while “many of the problems originate within the BJP itself”. He alleged that several recent cases of sexual exploitation across the country had involved BJP office-bearers and elected representatives.
Negi added that controversies linked to BJP leaders—ranging from job-related allegations to disputes over party tickets—were being reported in several states. Congress legislators demanded that the BJP leadership take responsibility for the growing number of such cases within its ranks.
