Snowfall in Himachal Pradesh’s higher reaches is expected to ease by evening, but a cold wave is set to grip several districts from January 3, the weather office in Shimla has said. Scientist Shobhit Katiyar at the Meteorological Centre Shimla said an active western disturbance triggered snowfall in higher areas from December 31, which is likely to subside later today. A change in weather has led to a drop of 3–5°C in night temperatures across many parts of the state.
A yellow alert for cold wave conditions has been issued for six districts — Una, Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Solan — beginning Friday. People in the plains, including Una, Bilaspur and Sundernagar in Mandi district, are also likely to face dense morning fog during this period, officials said.
Light snowfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours in high-altitude areas of Lahaul and Spiti, Chamba, Kullu and Shimla districts, contributing to a further fall in temperatures.
The weather office expects conditions to remain unfavourable till Friday evening. From Saturday, skies are likely to clear across the state, although cold wave conditions are expected to persist.
