The Centre is investing Rs 4,679.85 crore in the Silk Samagra-2 scheme to strengthen the country’s sericulture sector between 2021-22 and 2025-26. The initiative, led by the Central Silk Board, aims to improve silk production and provide direct support to farmers.

Under the scheme, financial aid is being provided to states for projects such as kissan nurseries, silkworm rearing, chawki rearing centres, and infrastructure for silk seed production, reeling, and weaving. So far, ₹1,075.58 crore has been allocated, benefiting nearly 78,000 people.

Efforts to enhance silk production through research and development are also underway as part of the government’s drive for self-sufficiency in the sector. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have received ₹72.50 crore and ₹40.66 crore respectively in the past three years to aid local silk farmers.

Beyond silk, the government is supporting the handloom sector through initiatives like the Raw Material Supply Scheme (RMSS) and the National Handloom Development Programme. These schemes provide financial assistance for raw materials, upgraded looms, solar lighting, design innovation, and infrastructure. Marketing fairs and exhibitions are also being organised to help Indian textiles reach a global audience. Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita shared these updates in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
