New Delhi, September 26
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana in Bihar, calling it a landmark step for women’s empowerment. Speaking through video conference on the occasion of Navratri, Modi said ₹10,000 had been transferred directly into the bank accounts of 75 lakh women under the scheme. He described the initiative as a “significant milestone” for Bihar’s women, adding that financial independence would give them dignity and new opportunities.
The Prime Minister credited the Jan Dhan Yojana and Aadhaar-linked accounts for making such direct transfers possible. “Without this infrastructure, beneficiaries would have suffered grave injustice,” he said.
Modi added that the new scheme will ensure at least one woman in every family benefits, with support rising to ₹2 lakh depending on enterprise success. Women will be able to open shops or engage in livestock businesses, with training provided.
The programme will also integrate with Bihar’s 11 lakh self-help groups, which the Prime Minister said would strengthen its impact. He linked the initiative to the central government’s Lakhpati Didi campaign, noting that more than two crore women nationwide have already become financially self-reliant.
Modi also highlighted government schemes such as Mudra Yojana, Drone Didi, Bima Sakhi and Bank Didi, which he said were expanding opportunities for women across India. He contrasted these with what he termed the “lantern era” of previous Bihar governments, when poor infrastructure and lawlessness, he argued, hurt women the most.
“Today, whether it is joining the armed forces, police or flying fighter jets, women are moving forward in every sector,” he said, adding that both the Centre and the state government were committed to ensuring their prosperity.
