Himachal Pradesh’s Hariman Sharma has been honored with the Padma Shri, India’s highest civilian award, for his transformative contribution to agriculture. Sharma developed the HRMN-99, a self-pollinating, low-chill apple variety that thrives in tropical and sub-tropical climates. Unlike traditional apples, HRMN-99 flourishes in areas with temperatures reaching 40-45°C, enabling apple cultivation in regions once considered unsuitable. Orphaned as a child, Sharma’s journey from a small village in Bilaspur to receiving the prestigious award reflects his dedication to farming. In 1998, he planted discarded apple seeds, leading to the development of the HRMN-99 variety. By 2001, the plant bore fruit, and Sharma expanded his orchards. His breakthrough, initially overlooked, gained recognition in 2012 from the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), which facilitated its validation and spread across 29 states.
Sharma’s efforts have made apples more accessible, benefiting thousands of farmers and promoting nutritional access. The HRMN-99’s commercial adoption, supported by NIF and various government departments, has transformed the Indian apple industry. Sharma has received numerous accolades, including the National Innovative Farmer Award and the National Best Farmer Award. His innovation aligns with sustainable development goals, providing additional income to farmers and improving livelihoods.
