Amit Shah approves Rs 1115.67 crore for disaster mitigation projects

 A High-Level Committee chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved Rs 1115.67 crore for disaster mitigation and capacity-building projects across various states. The committee, which includes the Finance Minister, Agriculture Minister, and the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, endorsed two major proposals.

The first project, aimed at mitigating landslide risk in 15 states, received approval for funding from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF). States benefiting from the Rs. 1000 crore project include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. The allocated amounts range from  Rs 50 crore for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal to Rs. 378 crore for the Northeast states.

The second initiative, focused on training and capacity-building for civil defense volunteers, received Rs. 115.67 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). This funding complements previous projects approved by the committee, including urban flood risk mitigation in seven cities, with a total outlay of Rs 3075.65 crore, and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk management in four states, amounting to Rs 150 crore.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the government has released over Rs 21,476 crore this year to support disaster management. This includes funds from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), and other state-specific disaster mitigation funds.
