Punjab born NRI industrialist Swraj Paul passes away at 94

Leading NRI industrialist and philanthropist Lord Swraj Paul passed away in London on Friday at the age of 94. Founder of the UK-based Caparo Group of Industries and a member of the House of Lords, he was born in Jalandhar and moved to the UK in the 1960s while seeking treatment for his daughter Ambika. Following her death at the age of four, he established the Ambika Paul Foundation, which went on to contribute millions towards education, health, and the welfare of children worldwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today posted a heartfelt message on X, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Swraj Paul Ji. “His contributions to industry, philanthropy and public service in the UK, and his unwavering support for closer ties with India will always be remembered. I fondly recall our many interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” he added.

The contributions of Lord Swraj Paul have been tremendous. Lord Swraj Paul, PC, Chairman of Caparo Group and Caparo Bull Moose, Inc., donated $5 million through the Ambika Paul Foundation to establish the Swraj Paul Theatre at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium, named in honour of him and his late son Angad, according to the information shared by the official website of the Caparo Industries. An MIT alumnus, he credited the institute for shaping his career and guiding Caparo’s expansion into the United States. Through the foundation, created in memory of his daughter, he extended his philanthropy to education, health, and the welfare of children worldwide.
