Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said it is receiving “good cooperation” from Iranian authorities in the case of three Punjabi men reported missing in Iran after they set out for Australia earlier this year. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, speaking at a press conference, confirmed that the Indian government is actively pursuing the case. The three missing men — Amritpal Singh (23) from Hoshiarpur, Jaspal Singh from Nawanshehar, and Husanpreet Singh (27) from Sangrur — were allegedly kidnapped by a trafficking network operating through Pakistan, according to their families.
Relatives of the victims claim the men were lured by a Hoshiarpur-based travel agent with promises of jobs in Australia. Instead, the men reportedly ended up in Iran, where their families say the alleged traffickers are now demanding a ransom of ₹18 lakh for each individual’s release.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has confirmed it is in close contact with Iranian authorities and has “strongly taken up the matter” to ensure the safety and swift tracing of the missing citizens.
“The Embassy of India has requested Iranian authorities to urgently locate the missing Indian citizens and ensure their well-being,” an official statement said. The embassy added that it is regularly updating the families on developments.
