Astronomers have detected a powerful burst of radio waves, known as FRB 20220610A, that reached Earth after an astonishing 8-billion-year journey through space. This fast radio burst (FRB) is one of the most distant and energetic signals ever recorded, leaving scientists intrigued by its mysterious origin. FRBs are intense, millisecond-long flashes of radio waves, and their source remains largely unknown. The discovery was reported by news outlet earth.com citing the research paper published in the journal Science. These signals challenge our understanding of cosmic events, as they originate from galaxies far beyond the Milky Way, hinting at processes in the universe that are yet to be fully understood.

Dr. Stuart Ryder, an astronomer at Macquarie University in Australia, is part of a team working to unravel the mysteries of these bursts. Using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), the team detected the burst and traced its origin, the said the news portal. They pinpointed the source galaxy using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, identifying it as older and more distant than any previously discovered FRB origin.

FRBs like this one release immense amounts of energy in mere milliseconds—equivalent to the energy our Sun produces over 30 years. Scientists theorize that these bursts may be linked to magnetars, highly energetic remnants of supernova explosions.
