Five persons feared trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in Sohana village on Saturday evening, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
Officials said the collapse occurred due to excavation work being carried out adjacent to the building’s basement in recent days. Locals revealed that the gym-goers and construction workers were inside or near the structure at the time.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, who arrived at the site to oversee rescue efforts, told the media, “We are probing the matter. As per the initial investigation, the building collapsed due to excavation work being carried out adjacent to it.”
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and district authorities have deployed earth-moving machinery and emergency services to expedite the operation. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate and assist those trapped.
