At least five people have died, and more than 2,000 structures have been destroyed as wildfires rage across Los Angeles County, prompting mass evacuations and emergency responses, the news outlet Los Angeles reported. Approximately 50,000 residents in affected areas of the US have been ordered to evacuate as three major fires rapidly spread, consuming thousands of acres, The Guardian reported. The largest blaze, dubbed the Palisades Fire, has consumed at least 5,000 acres near Pacific Palisades, forcing 30,000 to evacuate. Fires are also burning in the eastern mountains above Pasadena and in Sylmar, a northern Los Angeles suburb.

California Governor Gavin Newsom described the situation as “unprecedented” and mobilized 1,400 firefighters to combat the infernos. The flames have turned the skies orange, severed power to hundreds of thousands, and destroyed scores of homes, including luxury properties in Malibu. Hurricane-strength winds are intensifying the blazes, according to The Washington Post. Authorities warn conditions may worsen as red flag warnings remain in place for Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Thursday. These devastating fires have left two people dead, caused significant injuries, and prompted widespread chaos, including gridlocked roads as residents fled.
