Shimla, December 17

Weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh are expected to change after three days, with a western disturbance set to become active from the night of December 19, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla said. According to the department, light snowfall is likely on the higher reaches of Chamba, Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts on December 20 and 21. Most other parts of the state are expected to remain dry with clear skies.

The state has witnessed a prolonged dry spell of more than six weeks, leading to higher-than-normal temperatures in several areas. Officials said the lack of rainfall has contributed to unusual warmth during the winter season. Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma of the Shimla Meteorological Centre said Himachal Pradesh has remained largely dry since the end of the monsoon. Rainfall was 95 percent below normal in November, while December has so far recorded a 100 percent deficit.

He said that over the past 24 hours, day temperatures in some areas rose by three to five degrees Celsius, and a further rise is possible in the coming days. However, once the weather changes from December 20, a drop in temperatures is expected. The department added that there is no strong likelihood of widespread rainfall during December.
