Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday called on lawmakers to prioritise dialogue over discord, warning that internal political conflict only serves to strengthen the country’s adversaries. Addressing members of Parliament during the opening of the Monsoon Session, Dhankhar said that India’s democratic tradition is rooted in “discourse, dialogue and deliberation” — not confrontation. He urged all political parties to come together in the spirit of cooperation for the nation’s progress.

“Conflict is not the way forward. Our internal fighting provides material for our enemies to divide us,” he said. “I urge all political parties, both ruling and opposition, to engage in constructive politics for Bharat’s greater progress,” he said.

He stressed the importance of reducing political acrimony, arguing that constant tension is unsustainable in a thriving democracy. He reminded members that, despite ideological differences, all political parties share a commitment to the national interest. He also appealed for more civil behaviour in public discourse, criticising personal attacks and offensive language — particularly during televised debates — which he said go against India’s civilisational values.

“No one in India opposes the nation’s interests,” he said. “Let us foster bonhomie and mutual respect. Unbecoming language and personal attacks, especially on television, damage the dignity of public life” he added.

Dhankhar expressed hope that the Monsoon Session would be productive and meaningful with the active participation of all sides, calling for a reset in the tone of political dialogue.
