India’s cricket star Virat Kohli is at the centre of controversy following a heated on-field altercation with Australian debutant Sam Konstas during Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to review the incident, which occurred after Australia won the toss and chose to bat.
The clash took place during the break between the 10th and 11th overs of the Australian innings. As Konstas and Usman Khawaja switched ends, Kohli appeared to deliberately walk into Konstas, seemingly bumping into him, the news outlet India Today reported.
Konstas, who had been aggressively taking on India’s fast bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, was the focus of Kohli’s attention. Reports suggest Kohli may have attempted to unnerve the young batter, possibly with a shoulder push, which led to a confrontation on the field.
The news outlet the NDTV Sports highlighted that the incident quickly garnered widespread attention, with former cricketers such as Ricky Ponting and Michael Vaughan calling for the ICC to impose sanctions on Kohli. Given the nature of the altercation, it is understood that the ICC will review the matter closely to determine if any disciplinary action is required.
