The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Constable Kindar Singh, stationed at Garhshankar police station in Hoshiarpur district, for accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000, an official spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday. The co-accused, SHO Baljinder Singh Malhi, managed to flee, the VB said.

The incident came to light after Hardeep Kaur, a resident of Rupnagar district’s Nangal sub-division, filed a complaint alleging the officers demanded Rs 1 lakh to prevent her brother’s involvement in a narcotics case. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 50,000. A VB team from Hoshiarpur, following a preliminary inquiry, set a trap that caught Singh accepting the bribe in the presence of two witnesses. SHO Malhi escaped during the operation.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been filed against both officers at the VB police station in Jalandhar. The arrested constable will be produced in court tomorrow, while further investigation is ongoing.
