In a dramatic reversal of long-standing policy, the United States joined Russia in voting against a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The move, which put Washington at odds with its European allies, came on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The resolution, drafted by Ukraine and the European Union, named Russia as the aggressor and demanded its forces withdraw. A total of 93 countries backed the motion, while 18— including the US and Russia— opposed it, The Guardian reported.

The US also aligned with Russia later on Monday, voting in favour of a separate, US-led Security Council resolution that avoided labelling Moscow as the aggressor or reaffirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity. European members refused to back it, underscoring growing transatlantic tensions. The shift in US policy comes as the Trump administration explores diplomatic talks with Moscow to end the war, the US based news outlet further said. President Donald Trump has intensified criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while European leaders scramble to adjust.

According to reports, India, China, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Vietnam were among the 65 UN member states that abstained from the resolution.
