US President Joe Biden has granted a full pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, reversing his earlier stance on not intervening in his son’s legal matters. The pardon, issued on Sunday, covers Hunter Biden’s convictions related to gun and tax offenses, as well as any potential federal crimes committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024.
In a statement, President Biden acknowledged the shift, saying, “From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.” He argued that Hunter Biden faced prosecution over issues that are typically resolved through non-criminal measures, highlighting the lack of aggravating factors in his case.
Biden also criticized political opponents for influencing the legal proceedings, calling the charges politically motivated. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son—and that is wrong,” he added.
Hunter Biden, who has been sober for over five years, has faced ongoing scrutiny amid what his father describes as relentless attacks. The decision marks a dramatic turn for the president, who had previously pledged not to involve himself in his son’s legal matters.
