The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the Terms of Reference for the 8th Central Pay Commission. The panel will be a temporary body tasked with reviewing and recommending pay structures for central government employees. The Commission will have a Chairperson, one Part-Time Member, and one Member-Secretary. It will submit its recommendations within 18 months of its formation, and may also send interim reports on specific matters as they are finalised, said Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Sharing details, he further said that the Commission has been asked to take into account key factors such as the country’s economic conditions, fiscal prudence, availability of resources for welfare measures, and the financial impact on state governments that usually adopt its recommendations with some modifications. It will also examine the existing pay structure, benefits, and working conditions of employees in Central Public Sector Undertakings and the private sector while framing its recommendations. The move aims to ensure a balanced approach to employee welfare and fiscal responsibility, he added.
