The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack in in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed the lives of at least 26 people on April 22, calling for international cooperation to bring those responsible to justice. In a rare unanimous statement, Council members expressed their “deepest sympathy and condolences” to the families of the victims, and extended solidarity to both the Indian and Nepalese governments. Several of those killed were Nepalese workers, according to early reports. Many more victims remain injured.

Calling the assault “reprehensible,” the Security Council underlined the need to hold “perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors” of terrorism accountable, urging all states to cooperate fully with relevant authorities in line with international law and Security Council resolutions.

“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” the statement said.

They also reiterated that “any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.”

The Council’s remarks reflect growing international concern over the persistent threat of terrorism in the region. The attack is one of the deadliest in recent years and comes amid heightened tensions along the Line of Control.

Echoing past UN declarations, the Council insisted that efforts to counter terrorism must align with the UN Charter and international human rights, refugee, and humanitarian law.

As investigations continue, Indian officials have vowed a firm response. Meanwhile, the UN’s call for collective action highlights the enduring need for cross-border cooperation in confronting violent extremism.
