New Delhi, March 11

Two Indian nationals have been killed and another is missing after merchant vessels came under attack during the ongoing conflict in West Asia, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the ministry said the government was closely monitoring the situation and remained committed to the safety and welfare of Indian citizens living in the Gulf region.

The attacks on commercial vessels come amid escalating hostilities involving United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other. According to reports, the US and Israel launched a major military strike on Iran on 28 February that killed the country’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was 86. The conflict has since caused heavy casualties across the region. Reports say at least 1,230 people have been killed in Iran, 397 in Lebanon and 11 in Israel. India’s foreign ministry said it continued to track developments in the region and provide assistance to its nationals where required.
