Shimla, February 23
The Shimla Police claimed to have solved a murder case after arresting two men in connection with the death of a labourer whose body was found near a river in Rohru subdivision.
The body was discovered on 18 February near Badiyara bridge in the Kilochha stream along the Pabbar river, within the Chirgaon police station area. According to Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh, the victim’s hands and feet were tied and there were visible injury marks on the body. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Forensic teams and a dog squad were deployed as part of the investigation.
The Police said inquiries revealed the victim had last been seen with two Nepalese nationals. Investigators allege that on February 17 the suspects visited the victim’s room, consumed alcohol and later took him to the riverside. Following an argument, they allegedly killed him using a sharp weapon and stones, disfigured his face to conceal his identity and fled with his mobile phone.
Digital evidence led officers to trace the suspects to Kasol and Manikaran in Kullu district. They were identified through a migrant labour registration record as Lalit Rana, also known as Laxman Rana (20), and Sahabir Luwar (21), both from Jajarkot district in Nepal. The two were arrested in Kasol on the night of 22–23 February, and the victim’s mobile phone was recovered, police said.
He further said that the investigation was ongoing and urged residents to ensure proper registration of migrant workers and tenants.
In a separate case, Shimla police arrested a woman from Kharar near Chandigarh on allegations of defrauding a victim of ₹2.5m on the pretext of arranging a Canadian visa. The accused, identified as Manju Kumari, was detained following technical surveillance and coordinated searches in Punjab and Haryana. Police said further investigations were under way to identify others potentially linked to the network.
