Punjab police have arrested two individuals in connection with a WhatsApp group allegedly linked to a plot targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The group is believed to support jailed MP Amritpal Singh and is being investigated for possible anti-national activities.
The group, reportedly named Waris Punjab De Team, had over 600 members and was discovered after screenshots of its messages surfaced on social media. In the leaked chats, members allegedly discussed “revenge” for what they claim was the wrongful incarceration of Amritpal Singh.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Faridkot Range, Ahwani Kapur, confirmed the arrests via a video message, stating that the investigation was triggered by the leaked content. He said that police are treating the case seriously, given the nature of the threats and the individuals allegedly being targeted.
An FIR has been registered, and the accused are being questioned to determine the extent of the group’s activities and affiliations. The Police have not ruled out further arrests as the probe expands.
Police have also begun examining the group’s wider digital footprint to identify other potentially active members and investigate any links to organised or extremist networks.
Amritpal Singh, a self-styled preacher and political activist, was arrested under the National Security Act in 2023.
