The US presidential race remained too close to call on Wednesday as ballot counting continued, but Donald Trump’s victory in the battleground state of North Carolina bolstered Republican hopes for reclaiming the White House, the news outlet The Guardian. Trump, 78, is running for the presidency for the third consecutive time, persisting with unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him. The former president, who has faced two impeachments and a criminal conviction, also survived two assassination attempts this summer, marking him as the oldest major party nominee in US  history.

Vice President Kamala Harris, 60, secured the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden suspended his re-election bid. Harris, who previously served as a senator and California’s attorney general, is seeking to become the first woman to hold the presidency in the United States’ 248-year history, the news outlet said.

While past elections have seen tight outcomes, such as George W. Bush’s narrow 2000 win over Al Gore that depended on a razor-thin margin in Florida, there has often been an indication of the race’s direction in its final days. In 2016, polls underestimated Trump’s late surge against Hillary Clinton. This year, however, polling results have been mixed, making analysts cautious about definitive predictions, according to the BBC.

Polling and forecasts indicate a neck-and-neck contest between Harris and Trump. Both candidates made last-minute appeals in key swing states, emphasizing the election’s historic implications, according to The News Week.
