US President Donald Trump said he will impose 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports on Monday, affecting key trading partners, including Canada and Mexico, in a fresh escalation of his trade policies. Trump’s announcement came as China’s retaliatory tariffs, introduced last week, took effect, the US-based news outlet The Guardian reported. The new measures target $14 billion worth of products, including a 15% tariff on coal and LNG and a 10% levy on crude oil, farm equipment, and some vehicles. Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said he would also announce reciprocal tariffs on Tuesday or Wednesday, which would take effect immediately. “If they charge us, we charge them,” he told reporters.

According to NDTV, Trump did not specify which countries would be targeted but emphasized that U.S. tariff rates would match those of its trade partners. During his first term (2016-2020), Trump imposed similar tariffs but later granted duty-free quotas to Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. His successor, Joe Biden, extended these exemptions to Britain, Japan, and the European Union. However, U.S. steel mill capacity utilization has declined in recent years.
