US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned BRICS nations against replacing the US dollar as a reserve currency, reiterating his 100% tariff threat first issued after his November election victory. Posting on his social media platform, Trump stated, “The idea that BRICS countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER.”

He said the US would demand a commitment from BRICS members that they would neither create a new currency nor support an alternative to the “mighty U.S. Dollar.” Any country attempting to do so, he warned, would face punitive tariffs and risk losing access to the American market.

“There is no chance that BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in international trade or anywhere else,” Trump added. “Any country that tries should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to America.”

The BRICS bloc—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has explored de-dollarization strategies in recent years, including discussions on a common trading currency to reduce reliance on the US dollar.
