President-elect Donald Trump has announced his second inauguration ceremony will take place indoors at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda due to dangerously low temperatures forecast for Monday. “The weather forecast for Washington D.C., with the windchill factor, could take temperatures into severe record lows. There is an Arctic blast sweeping the country. I don’t want to see people hurt or injured in any way,” Trump posted on social media platform Truth Social.
Citing safety concerns, Trump said the event will follow a precedent set by Ronald Reagan in 1985 when cold weather forced an indoor ceremony. Prayers, speeches, and his swearing-in alongside Vice President-elect JD Vance will occur in the rotunda, which can accommodate approximately 600 people, according to the news outlet The Guardian. Guests and donors will be present for the ceremony, but plans for other ticket holders remain unclear. The Capitol Rotunda is typically reserved for significant events such as state funerals. Trump emphasized his concern for public safety, calling the decision “the only responsible course of action.”
