Chandigarh-born Harmeet K. Dhillon has been appointed Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice by President-elect Donald Trump. Announcing the nomination, Trump praised Dhillon’s career-long commitment to civil liberties. “Harmeet has consistently defended our cherished freedoms, from challenging Big Tech over free speech censorship to representing Christians barred from praying during COVID, and suing corporations for discriminatory woke policies,” he said.
Reacting to the nomination on X (formerly Twitter), Dhillon expressed gratitude, calling it an honor to serve her country. “It has been my dream to contribute to our nation’s civil rights agenda,” she wrote, adding that she hoped to honor the memories of her late father and husband with her work. Dhillon also acknowledged the support of her family and the leadership of former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who heads the DOJ team.
Trump also highlighted Dhillon’s expertise as an election lawyer, emphasizing her work to ensure only legal votes are counted. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School, she previously clerked at the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. “She is a respected member of the Sikh religious community and will be a steadfast enforcer of civil rights and election laws,” Trump added on his social media platform.
