McLeod Ganj, March 25

Thousands of devotees gathered at the Tsuglagkhang Buddhist Monastery in McLeod Ganj to offer prayers for the long life of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.

The prayer ceremony, held at the monastery, saw a massive turnout from the Tibetan community, with many expressing deep joy after having a glimpse of the spiritual leader. The event was organised by groups including the U-Tsang Cholkha, Dokham Jachuka Association, and Kyidong Welfare Association. Devotees from different parts of India and abroad also attended in large numbers to pray for his longevity.

Tsering Dondup, who had come from Gangtok, said the prayer gathering was organised by a section of the Tibetan community for the long life of the Dalai Lama. “The happiness I felt after seeing the spiritual leader cannot be expressed in words. His long life is extremely important for all of us,” he said.

Gompo Wangchuk, who has lived in India for the past five decades and is currently based in Canada, also attended the event. He said that the Tibetan community is observing the Dalai Lama’s 90th birth year as the “Year of Compassion,” with celebrations continuing until July 6.

He added that the event was organised collectively by 18 organisations and emphasised that such gatherings are important, especially as the Tibet issue remains unresolved. Wangchuk expressed hope for an early resolution and wished for the Dalai Lama’s return to the Potala Palace.

He further said that the prayer ceremony for the Dalai Lama’s long life and global well-being holds great significance, adding that seeing the spiritual leader felt like witnessing a presence that inspires people everywhere.
