Responding to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused political opponents of ignoring constitutional rights for decades.
“Those who walk with the Constitution in their pockets compelled Muslim women to live a life full of troubles,” Modi said, referring to his government’s decision to abolish instant triple talaq.
He criticized those who, he claimed, made it a “fashion” to talk about caste. “For 30-35 years, MPs from all parties demanded constitutional status for the OBC Commission. Those who speak about caste today forgot it then. We gave it constitutional status,” Modi said.
Modi also condemned what he called the use of “urban Naxal” language to challenge the Indian state, saying such rhetoric undermined national unity.
Defending his government’s move to revoke Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu & Kashmir, Modi said, “For seven decades, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh were deprived of constitutional rights. Now, people there enjoy the same rights as all Indians.”
He underscored his government’s efforts to uplift marginalized groups, including the creation of separate ministries for the Northeast, tribal affairs, fisheries, skill development, and cooperatives.
“Our focus has always been on those left behind, as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi,” Modi said.
