Thailand has officially passed the landmark marriage equality Bill and made it a law to recognise same-sex unions. Thailand’s King has signed the Bill, making the country the first in Southeast Asia to leagalise same- sex marriage and third territory in Asia to recognise same-sex couples after Nepal and Taiwan, reported the news outlet Times of India.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn has endorsed a new law that will allow LGBTQ+ couples to register their marriages, according to the Royal Gazette. Media reports indicate the legislation will come into effect in 120 days, enabling LGBTQ+ couples to legally marry by January next year, according to media reports.

The Bill cleared the Senate in June but required royal endorsement to become law. It was published in the Royal Gazette on Tuesday and will come into effect on 22 January next year, according to the news outlet the BBC. The new law uses gender-neutral terms in place of “husbands”, “wives”, “men” and “women”. And it grants same-sex couples adoption and inheritance rights, the news outlet said.
