Tesla, the electric vehicle giant founded by Elon Musk, has launched its compact electric crossover SUV, the Model Y, in the Indian market on Tuesday. The company claims the vehicle offers a maximum range of up to 622 kilometers on a single full charge. In terms of safety, the Model Y is equipped with advanced features such as eight airbags and Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including lane-keeping assist and blind spot monitoring.
The electric SUV has been introduced in two variants — Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD). While the starting price in the U.S. market is $37,490, the vehicle has been priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Globally, the Model Y is available with two battery options: a standard 60 kWh LFP battery and a 75 kWh NMC battery in the Long Range and performance versions. The standard variant claims a range of up to 499 kilometers, while the Long Range version delivers up to 622 kilometers on a full charge.
The Model Y continues to be Tesla’s highest-selling and most affordable offering worldwide, and it was also the world’s best-selling car in 2023. The vehicle has been spotted multiple times testing on Indian roads, and was recently seen without any camouflage. Media reports have also revealed the homologation and import documentation for the Model Y, further suggesting that this model is likely to be Tesla’s first official entry into the Indian market.
