A man accused of sharing sensitive military information with Pakistan’s intelligence agency has been arrested in Punjab. In a joint operation by Counter-Intelligence Punjab and Tarn Taran Police, Gagandeep Singh—also known as Gagan—was taken into custody in Tarn Taran district, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said in a statement on Tuesday.
Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Mohalla Rodupur in Tarn Taran, had allegedly been in direct contact with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Khalistani supporter Gopal Singh Chawla, who is believed to be based in Pakistan. Gagandeep has passed on classified information related to troop deployments and strategic army locations during Operation Sindoor, a military exercise, the police said.
“This unauthorised sharing of military intelligence posed a grave threat to national security,” said DGP Yadav said in his post on X. Preliminary investigations suggest Gagandeep maintained contact with Chawla for the past five years. Through this connection, he is believed to have been introduced to Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs), from whom he also reportedly received payments routed through Indian financial channels.
Police have recovered a mobile phone from Gagandeep Singh containing sensitive information allegedly shared with PIOs, along with contact details for over 20 ISI-linked individuals. The Police are now conducting financial and technical investigations to determine the wider scope of the espionage network. An FIR has been registered under the Official Secrets Act at City Police Station, Tarn Taran. Further inquiries are ongoing. The Punjab Police reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national sovereignty and said that stringent action would be taken against anyone found engaged in anti-national activities.
