Speculation is growing in Punjab’s political circles over whether former cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife, Dr. Navjot Kaur, may be preparing to move towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The discussion follows Dr Navjot Kaur’s sharp public criticism of the Congress leadership, which led to her suspension from the party on Monday.

Political analysts say Sidhu is a shrewd strategist and argue that such serious allegations from his wife are unlikely to have been made without careful consideration. Many believe the episode reflects a deeper rift rather than an impulsive outburst.

Dr Navjot Kaur on Saturday alleged that the chief minister’s post in Punjab goes to “whoever brings a suitcase of ₹500 crore”, a remark that drew backlash from within the party. On Monday, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring suspended her primary membership, though the party did not publicly state the reasons.

Following her suspension, Dr. Navjot Kaur posted a video of an old statement by Warring on social media and accused him of being “insensitive, irresponsible, morally dishonest and corrupt”. She wrote that she refused to stand with such leadership and sided instead with those who had been “hurt” by Warring’s conduct. She also questioned why the Punjab chief minister was “protecting” him.

After being suspended by the Congress, Dr Navjot Kaur intensified her criticism of the party’s leadership, accusing it of silencing internal dissent and practising “double standards” on discipline.

In a post on X, she wrote that “speaking the truth in Congress is like striking an axe on one’s own foot”, adding that the party had a long tradition of expelling those who asked questions without giving reasons. She alleged that while the Congress demands democracy outside, it “imposes dictatorship” on its own leaders internally.

Dr Kaur said she had merely shown the courage to speak the truth.

In a subsequent post, she shared a television debate clip and questioned why the party’s disciplinary committee had remained “asleep” when Congress leaders allegedly supported SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia during Navjot Singh Sidhu’s election. She further asked why no action was taken when party leaders and workers openly backed rival parties, and yet some were later appointed district presidents.

Her remarks have further deepened the rift between the Sidhu camp and the Punjab Congress leadership, already strained by her suspension and earlier allegations.
