The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a stern warning to the Punjab government regarding the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 23 days. The court emphasised that the state would be held responsible if anything untoward occurred, according to media reports. The apex court directed the Punjab government to take “extraordinary steps” to safeguard Dallewal’s health, including hospitalisation, while urging continued efforts to resolve the farmers’ ongoing agitation along the Khanauri-Shambhu border stretch between Punjab and Haryana, the news outlet The Hindustan Times reported. The Supreme Court underscored that the intervention sought to amplify farmers’ concerns, ensuring their demands are heard “loud and clear” by relevant stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Punjab’s farmer protests led by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha escalated today as thousands participated in a three-hour ‘rail roko’ agitation, halting train services at key stations, including Moga, Faridkot, and Mohali. The farmers were demanding a legally guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) and justice for those injured or killed during earlier agitations.
